St. Armand's Circle to Have New Parking Garage

There is change coming to the landscape of St. Armand's Circle on Lido Key in Sarasota.

We will soon see a three-story parking garage - an unusual sight in this tropical, waterfront neighborhood with many luxury beachfront and canalfront homes and condos.

Sarasota County has had three meetings and it looks like the garage is imminent.  It is definitely needed in the winter season, January through April, when the population swells and many winter residents and visitors flock to the Sarasota area to get away from the cold.  St. Armand's Circle on Lido Key is a destination with its upscale boutiques and world-class restaurants.  It is also five minutes drive to the cultural activities in downtown Sarasota.  Homes in this area range from mid $600,000 to multi million dollars.

New Bridge for Anna Maria

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has determined that a high-level fixed bridge will replace the current Anna Maria span built in 1957 at the western end of SR 64. While the final structural design plans of the new bridge are yet to be drawn, recommendations on how it will look was completed in April.

The new span, estimated to cost about $84 million, will be built approximately 14 feet south of the existing bridge and allow 65 feet of vertical navigational clearance. Its fixed-span feature would help ease traffic between Anna Maria and mainland Manatee County, officials say, because this would result in less traffic queuing compared with the drawbridge operation of the existing span.   Boating and fishing enthusiasts in the bay and Gulf of Mexico will more enjoy a day on the water.

Roundabout at US41 and Gulfstream in Downtown Sarasota

Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) conducted a Public Information Meeting on Tuesday March 28, 2017 at the Sarasota Municipal Auditorium and displayed information about a possible  roundabout at U.S.41 and Gulfstream. Over 100 people asked questions or made comments to FDOT officials.  Florida Dept of Transportation sees the project as a way to improve pedestrian and bicycle access between  Sarasota downtown and the bayfront waterfront area while improving traffic flow.

A major concern of many Golden Gate Point residents is the ability to safely walk cross Tamiami Trail into downtown.  The FDOT appears to be focusing on pedestrian traffic lights at points in the roundabout.  At least one Bird Key resident proposed a pedestrian bridge instead to allow the flow of car and truck traffic to continue uninterrupted in the roundabout.  It's not clear where the funding would come for a pedestrian bridge or where it can be located.
You can send comments to  FDOT-D1PIO@dot.state.fl.u. Another public hearing on the specific recommendation for the improvement, most likely a roundabout or new traffic signals, will be held in November, according to the FDOT schedule. A newsletter update on the study is planned for August.
